To preserve the wood, rub the wand with some mineral or vegetable oil and let it dry. This will keep the wood from getting dry and thirsty. Make tiny holes in the wood and add crystals and any of your favorite items.  
 
To keep the wand energized, hold a quartz crystal between your hands and charge it with your personal energy and power. Get a long piece of black velvet and keep the wand and the crystal wrapped together in it.  Remember to periodically re-charge the crystal often.
