I have read that the pentacle or pentagram is the symbol of the second degree in wicca, is this true and what if any are the symbols for the 1st and 3rd degrees.

Thank you for your question. Wicca, as you may well know is a broad religion which is interpreted by each practitioner in his or her own unique way. The answer to your question will – of necessity – be broadly speaking too. I hope that this is okay with you.

Wicca, unlike Freemasonry, has no degrees. All newcomers to Wicca start of as Seekers. This is the time when you seek your own truth by studying, practicing, investigating and learning – either from books, from other Wiccans or in a coven setup. Once you have learnt the basics and have found your way, you are initiated. This can be done on your own (self-initiation) or in a coven.

The pentagram and pentacle are not associated with a specific level within the Craft. It should be used by a Seeker from day one as it is one of the core symbols in Wicca. The history, meanings and uses of the pentacle and pentagram are well publicized and readily available on the internet and on the bookshelves. All symbols in Wicca are available to Seekers and Initiates alike.

Having said this, I must not neglect to mention that there may be covens that have created some sort of a hierarchy with secret symbols associated to each level in the hierarchy. This is however the exception and not the rule in Wicca.
