Will I be able to do spells like they do on the Charmed TV Show?

First of all, its important to know that the show Charmed is very loosely based on any real Wicca principles. The focus seems to be on the dynamics of the sister’s relationship with some wicca undertones. But, you shouldn’t take anything on the show about witchcraft or Wicca to be totally accurate. Hollywood plays loose with the facts in order to create the shows they believe will sell and Charmed is another example of this practice.

One example was the episode where Phoebe states, “A good witch follows the Wiccan rede: ‘An it harm none, do what ye will.’ A bad witch or warlock has but one goal: to kill good witches and retain their powers.” This idea makes for good television, but it is not accurate.

Here is the truth – Wicca’s governing principle is that no harm should ever result from a practitioner’s actions. That much is true. But, Wiccans reject the idea of a “bad witch” or warlock. The Wiccan belief is that all good or evil acts will be returned upon the practitioner three-fold. So, it would be self destructive to be a “bad witch”.

These kind of mistakes or misrepresentations support the area that Wicca is a cult of lunatics and malcontents. Another issue is that the human Wiccan characters in the show appear to be ineffective or of no real consequence. This makes it look like all the Wiccan characters besides the main characters are not justified in their beliefs.

So, I guess my question would be, are you sure that you want to do things like they do on the show? It is possible to perform spells, but it would be better not to use a television show as your guide. There is a wealth of information on the internet and many books which outline what to do and how to do it.
